If we look to the bible, we’d know that God doesn’t approve of our tendency to say or do hurtful things, then try to soften them with “JK” or “Just kidding” or any of the other myriad ways we try to pretend we didn’t hurt people, or worse, that it is the offended party’s fault for being hurt.
Seems to me, we’d do better to be willing to stand up and say, “I’m sorry” without excuses or qualifications. My friends, if we hurt someone – even if we didn’t mean hurt and often even if we had no control over it – if we hurt someone, we must be willing to acknowledge it and ask pardon for the pain we cause.
The fine art of apologizing would do well to return to our society.
Oh. In case you were wondering, here’s why I said God’s with me on this one:
Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death, is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, “I am only joking!”
Proverbs 26:18-19 (RSVCE)
